When Should Student-Athletes Start the College Recruiting Process?

Short answer: there is no single start date. Light preparation can begin around 8th or 9th grade, with more active research and coach outreach usually in sophomore and junior year. Timelines vary by sport, division, program and the individual athlete, so focus on the right steps for your athlete's current stage.

What this means: starting early is about habits — grades, results and a record of your athletic progress — not about sending coaches emails in middle school.

8th grade / rising freshman

  • Build good academic habits — grades count from the start of high school
  • Learn the basics of the division levels (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, junior college)
  • Start keeping a simple record of results, stats and teams
  • Focus on development and enjoying the sport

Freshman year

  • Keep GPA strong and take courses that keep college options open
  • Start a basic athletic profile: position or events, results, teams
  • Begin casually researching colleges by size, location and level
  • Save occasional video from competitions

Sophomore year

  • Build a first target school list with a mix of reach, realistic and safety options
  • Put together highlight video and updated stats or marks
  • Start introducing yourself to coaches where appropriate for your sport
  • Fill out recruiting questionnaires on official athletics sites

Junior year

  • Increase outreach and send regular updates with new results and video
  • Refine the target list based on coach responses and fit
  • Plan visits, camps or showcases at schools you are seriously considering
  • Take standardized tests if the schools on your list use them

Senior year

  • Keep coaches updated and respond promptly
  • Compare offers, academics, cost and fit with your family
  • Stay on top of application and financial aid deadlines
  • Keep options open — some programs recruit late, especially at certain levels

Staying organized at every stage

Whatever the grade, recruiting goes better with a short list of next steps, a record of every coach contact, and steady weekly progress. Our step-by-step guide on how to contact college coaches covers outreach in detail.

A note on rules and dates

Contact and communication rules differ by sport and division and can change. Check the current rules from the relevant governing body for your athlete's sport rather than relying on a single timeline.
