- When should my athlete start the college recruiting process?
- Most families benefit from starting with low-pressure steps in 8th or 9th grade: keeping grades strong, learning the division levels, and tracking results or stats. Outreach to coaches usually becomes more active in sophomore and junior year, but timing varies by sport, division and program.
- What do I get from the free assessment?
- The free assessment gives athletes an initial look at how colleges may fit their academic and athletic profile, including Reach, Realistic, and Safety categories. A membership unlocks the deeper matching, tracking, outreach, and weekly recruiting tools.
- How often should an athlete contact college coaches?
- Quality matters more than volume. A thoughtful first email, a follow-up after a couple of weeks if there is no reply, and short updates when there is real news (new results, video, schedule changes) is a reasonable rhythm for most athletes.
- How do we know which colleges are realistic matches?
- Momentum's free assessment compares your athlete's academics, athletic level and preferences against a directory of open U.S. colleges and groups results into Reach, Realistic and Safety schools. Treat those groupings as a starting point and confirm fit with coaches.
- What if we do not know which schools to contact yet?
- That is common. Start with the free assessment to get a ranked list of matching colleges, then save the ones that interest you to your target school list.
- Does Momentum contact college coaches for my athlete?
- No. Momentum helps athletes find the right contacts, prepare personalized outreach, track communication, and stay on top of follow-ups. The athlete remains in control of their own coach communication.
- Can athletes add schools they already know they are interested in?
- Yes. Athletes can search for and add any school to their target list, alongside schools suggested by the matching results.
- What is the difference between self-guided recruiting and Momentum’s Self-Guided Membership?
- Traditional self-guided recruiting often means the family is responsible for figuring out what to do, when to do it, which schools to target, how to contact coaches, and how to keep track of everything. Momentum’s Self-Guided Membership is different: athletes still own the recruiting process, but Momentum gives them a structured path with weekly recruiting sprints, school matching, target-school tracking, coach outreach templates, and clear next steps so they are not starting from scratch.
- How does Momentum keep school and coach information useful?
- School information comes from Momentum's stored copy of the federal college directory, which is refreshed periodically. Division labels come from lists Momentum maintains, and schools whose division can't be confirmed are marked as estimated. Coach contacts are shared as verified only when they match an official school or athletics page or have been confirmed by our team. When information is unknown or unconfirmed, Momentum labels it rather than guessing. Details still change, so check a school's official athletics site before reaching out.
